Heat Source

Postby Marco » Thu Apr 04, 2013 12:53 pm

Does anyone have an old modem/router that they don't use anymore? I'd like to try and use it as a heat source for my fermentation chamber, which is a large dorm fridge. I've tried a coffee cup warmer plate and a lamp but they both melt the inside of the fridge.

You could use a seedling heat mat used for seed germination. They are all over the place right now in the garden sections of many major department stores. They usually run a bit over $20. The 'brew-blankets' or 'bands' available at most online home-brew shops are essentially the same thing.

Of course, I'd also recommend a thermostat. And I'd also point out that you probably do not want to put the heat directly onto a glass carboy. It will create a good amount of thermal stress.
